Listing NFTs on Opensea on Polygon

NFTs are all the craze in 2021. But what exactly are they and how do I get my hands on one? Here’s a quick guide on NFTs and how you too can create and sell your very own NFT.

NFT stands for non-fungible token. When something is non-fungible, it means that it is unique. There is only one in the entire world. Inversely, when something is fungible, it is not unique. My 1 dollar note is the “same” as your 1 dollar note. Hence, my 1 dollar note is not unique and it’s fungible.

So when someone says Non-fungible token, they are referring to something that is unique AND it’s stored in a blockchain. You can think of it like a unique piece of art that is stored “digitally”.

Now why would someone care about NFTs? Well, because no one else can replicate and claim its authenticity. If you mint something and put it on the blockchain, you are able to prove that you have rights to owning that thing. With NFTs, artists now can create and distribute art where you can verify their authenticity.

It’s not all art with NFTs, we’ve been seeing more use cases where NFTs are used as ‘tickets’ to events. Recently, Gary Vee launched his NFTs called Vee Friends and holders of Vee Friends have rights to join certain Gary Vee events. And this is just the beginning for the use cases for NFTs.

So how does one buy an NFT? Well, there are various websites you can use to list your NFTs like Rarible and Mintable but today we’ll cover a platform called Opensea. https://opensea.io/

But before that, you would need a crypto wallet. Like all blockchain applications, we interact with them using a crypto wallet. This wallet would hold your cryptocurrencies and assets (like NFTs). A popular browser wallet is Metamask which you can get https://metamask.io/ . It is highly recommended that you keep your 12 words safe — write it down, store it offline. Do not share these 12 words with anyone.

Once you have your Metamask installed, go ahead and connect your wallet on https://opensea.io/ .

Hover over your profile and click on ‘My Collection’, then ‘Create your collection’

You can think of collection as a way to arrange your NFTs — you’re not actually uploading any NFTs yet. You can also set a description and input your social links.

Currently, Opensea allows creators to choose from 2 blockchains to add their NFTs to: Ethereum or Polygon. We’ll go ahead and choose Polygon and ‘ETH’ as the payment token. This means our NFTs will be listed with ETH as the currency but on the Polygon blockchain.

And your collection is created!

Now, you can add your NFTs into this collection. Click on the ‘Add Item’ button top right. Then, upload your NFT and give it a name.

Anddd that’s it! You have successfully listed your very own NFT on Opensea, congrats!
